Scam calls to watch for
- Your bank's "fraud team" asking you to move money to a "safe account".
No real bank asks you to move your money to protect it. Signs: impersonation and fear framing.
- Police, tax or customs officials threatening arrest.
Including "digital arrest" calls that keep you on a video call until you pay. Real officials don't demand payment over the phone. Signs: authority pressure and isolation.
- A relative in trouble who needs money now.
Voices can be cloned with AI from a few seconds of audio. Signs: false urgency and secrecy.
- Tech support saying your computer is infected.
They want remote access or payment for a fix you don't need. Signs: fear framing.
- "Your power will be cut off today."
A same-day disconnection threat with an unusual way to pay. Signs: false urgency.
How to protect yourself on a call
- Hang up and call back on a number you already have.
From your card, a bill or the official website, never the number the caller gives you.
- Agree a family code word.
A simple word only your family knows beats any voice clone.
- Never share one-time codes or PINs.
No bank, company or official will ask you to read them out.
- Record only where it's legal.
Many places require everyone on the call to agree to a recording. If you can't record, type what was said into the checker instead.
If you already paid or shared details
Call your bank on the number on your card straight away. Then report it:
- US: report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
- UK: report to Action Fraud; you can also call your bank on 159.
- India: call 1930 or report at cybercrime.gov.in; report the number through Chakshu on Sanchar Saathi.

Questions
Can I check a WhatsApp voice note for scams?
Yes. Upload the voice note (MP3, M4A, OGG/Opus or WAV) or record it with your microphone. Up to about two minutes are transcribed and checked. Nothing you upload is stored.
Can AI clone a family member's voice?
Yes. A few seconds of audio can be enough. If a call asks for money urgently, hang up and call the person back on the number you already have, or ask for your family code word.
Is it legal to record a phone call?
It depends on where you and the other person are. Many places require consent from everyone on the call. If you're not sure, don't record; type what was said into the checker instead.
What is a digital arrest scam?
Callers pose as police, customs or other officials, claim you're under investigation, and keep you on a video call until you pay to 'clear your name'. Real officials never arrest people over a call or ask for payment this way.
Is the scam call checker free?
Yes. One free check a day without an account, and five a day when you sign in free with your email.
