Free UPI ID check
Check a UPI ID before you pay
Paste the UPI ID (name@bank) or the upi:// link from a QR code, and tell us who you think you're paying and why. Kindyra OS checks whether the ID fits, flags the UPI scam scripts and tells you what to check in your UPI app before you enter your PIN.
Free tool that checks a payment request before you pay. How it works
- A clear light: red, amber or green, with every signal and why
- Checks on links and UPI IDs: lookalike addresses, new websites, personal IDs for company payments
- What to do instead: the safer way to pay this person, or to check them first
How to read a UPI ID
- The part after the @ is the app or bank.
@okaxis, @okhdfcbank, @okicici and @oksbi are Google Pay; @ybl, @ibl and @axl are PhonePe; @paytm and @pt… are Paytm. It tells you where the account is held, not who owns it.
- A 10-digit mobile number before the @ is a person.
That's normal for friends, family and small shops. It isn't how a bank, a government office, an electricity company or a courier collects money.
- Merchant IDs look different.
Business QR codes often use IDs starting with paytmqr, bharatpe or a long code, or a business handle. They're a good sign, but anyone can open a merchant account.
- The name in your app is the real check.
Before you enter your PIN, your UPI app shows the registered name of the account holder. If it isn't who you meant to pay, stop.
UPI scams to know
- "Enter your PIN to receive money."
A buyer, a "refund desk" or a prize message sends a collect request or a QR code. Entering your UPI PIN always sends money out of your account.
- KYC, electricity and "account blocked" messages.
A message says your account or power will be cut today unless you pay a small amount to a UPI ID. Real companies use their own app or website.
- "Army officer" sellers and rental deposits.
A seller who can't meet wants a token amount by UPI first. See it before you pay.
- Part-time "tasks" and investment groups.
Small payouts for likes or reviews, then a deposit to "unlock" your earnings.
- Fake customer-care numbers.
A number found through a search result asks you to install a screen-sharing app or pay a "refund fee". Use the number in the company's own app.
If you already paid
Call the National Cyber Crime Helpline on 1930 straight away, or report at cybercrime.gov.in, and call your bank on the number on your card or in its own app. The sooner you report, the better the chance of stopping the money. Report the number or message on Sanchar Saathi Chakshu too. More: how to report a scam.
Questions
How do I know whose UPI ID this is?
Your UPI app shows the account holder's registered name after you enter the UPI ID or scan the QR code, before you enter your PIN. Check that it's the person or business you meant to pay. Kindyra OS also flags when the ID doesn't look like the name you were given.
Can someone take money with just my UPI ID?
No. Money only leaves your account when you approve it with your UPI PIN. That's why scammers try to get you to approve a collect request or scan a QR code while saying you'll receive money.
Is a UPI ID with a mobile number a scam?
Not by itself. Many people and small shops use one. It's a warning sign when someone claiming to be a bank, government office, utility or big company asks you to pay one.
Can you read a UPI QR code?
In browsers that support it (such as Chrome on Android), the page reads a UPI QR code in your screenshot on your device and fills in the UPI ID. Otherwise, copy the UPI ID shown under the QR code, or the upi:// link.
Is this UPI check free?
Yes. Three checks a day without an account and ten a day when you sign in free with your email. Nothing you enter is stored.
